According to the National Health Information System (NHIS) 2007 report, it accounts for half of all hospitalizations in the country and is the primary cause of mortality in health care facilities. The program supported by this grant aims to reduce the malaria burden by increased coverage of antimalarial activities, building on results financed by three previous Global Fund grants (from Rounds 3, 4 and 6), with the specific objective of achieving universal coverage of long-lasting insecticidal nets by early 2012. Strategies include a mass distribution campaign for nets, and enabling correct diagnosis and treatment of malaria at community level. The program is supported by two Global Fund grants implemented by a government and civil society Principal Recipient, respectively. This grant focuses on the procurement and distribution of nets, training community leaders and health workers on the prevention and treatment of malaria, and behavior change communication activities – including provision of and training in the use of mobile audiovisual projection kits. The entire population of Togo will benefit from the program, which targets population groups most at risk from malaria: pregnant women and children under 5.
