General terms and conditions which apply to Global Fund grants. 47045-TAJ-809-G08-M-2 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Malaria was eliminated in the 1980s, but it reappeared the following decade when nearly 30,000 cases were reported in 1997. This was due to the economic upheaval triggered by the breakup of the Soviet Union, civil war and changes in agricultural practices, particularly the increase in rice cultivation, which spawned mosquito breeding grounds. The program supported by this grant aims to scale up efforts to prevent deaths caused by malaria, to interrupt P. falciparum malaria transmission, to reduce malaria-related illness and to contain and prevent malaria outbreaks in Tajikistan. Program objectives are to strengthen institutional capacities of the country’s National Malaria Control Program and general health services and to enhance capacities for decision-making related to malaria; to improve capacities for and access to early diagnosis and adequate treatment of malaria; to promote cost-effective and sustainable vector control; to improve capacities for timely response to and prevention of malaria outbreaks and epidemics; to reinforce country surveillance mechanisms; to strengthen research capabilities; and to increase community awareness and participation in malaria prevention.
