47045-RUS-304-G01-H-2 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Initially the Russian Federation’s HIV epidemic was almost exclusively spread through drug use and the sharing of contaminated needles, but heterosexual transmission is growing. The program supported by this grant aims to address the serious HIV and AIDS epidemic unfolding in the Russian Federation. It represents an integrated approach to improve the knowledge level of youth and the general population and addresses prevention among specific vulnerable groups including injecting drug users, sex workers, street children, men who have sex with men and prisoners. In addition, a treatment, care, health promotion and social support module addresses the needs of people living with HIV. The program also includes an advocacy module to improve the participation and effectiveness of government counterparts in HIV and AIDS policy. The grant term has been extended by two years for the provision of lifesaving prevention services to highly vulnerable groups such as injecting drug users, sex workers and men who have sex with men. The HIV prevention program supported by the grant operates through a consortium of nongovernmental organizations called GLOBUS in ten of the country’s 83 administrative regions.
