47045-PNG-607-G03-T-1 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria TB is a serious health and development problem in Papua New Guinea. TB case detection rates are low and treatment success rates are not good. The program supported by this grant aims to reduce illness and death due to TB by expanding DOTS services for diagnosis and treatment, addressing TB/HIV co-infection, assessing levels of multidrug-resistant TB and strengthening health systems. The program will set up a strong supervisory and coordination system, and involve community and church leaders in building community-based networks of volunteer DOTS providers and patient support groups. Grant funding will strengthen or establish at least 80 microscopy centers and train new and existing laboratory and health care staff.
