47045-PNG-012-G09-H-1 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria In Papua New Guinea (PNG), the estimated HIV prevalence among adults aged 15 to 49 is 0.5% (0.4% to 0.7%), according to 2012 UNAIDS estimates. There are 22,000 adults (15+) estimated to be living with HIV in 2012, of which 12,000 are women, and 3,100 are children. The goals of this Program are to reduce the transmission of HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections, minimize the impact of HIV on families and communities, as well as improving the capacity of district level health service delivery. More broadly this entails reducing the risks of HIV transmission, addressing factors that contribute to HIV vulnerability, scaling-up counseling and testing, and expanding treatment, care and support services. It will also focus on strengthening organizational and human capacity for coordinating and implementing the National HIV and AIDS Strategy. On the Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) side, managerial/technical skills and capacities of 89 district health managers will be strengthened and medical supply storage conditions will be improved. Particular emphasis is given to the general population in nine high-priority provinces for the HIV component, and the general national population for the HSS part of the grant. This Round 10 grant is complementary to the efforts of the Government of PNG, its development partners and the private sector entities actively engaged in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
