47045-PER-809-G06-T-2 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Although the incidence of new cases has been reduced since 1992, TB remains a significant public health problem in Peru, especially multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). The overall goal of the program supported by this grant is to contribute to universal access to prevention services for the general and highly vulnerable populations, as well as to provide care, treatment and complete support for all those affected by TB, MDR-TB and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) with a focus on social inclusion and human development. The program targets MDR-TB and XDR-TB patients and their families. Grant funds are being used to improve the impact of TB treatment in vulnerable populations; improve the laboratory network by upgrading the equipment and the information technology system; establish a quality sample transport system and training of health personnel; and scale up care and support to MDR-TB and XDR-TB patients by providing psycho-emotional support and drugs, surgery and support in case of adverse reaction to drugs, and training to health personnel. This grant is being implemented simultaneously with grants from Round 5 and Round 8.
