47045-NGR-506-G04-M-1 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria According to the 2009 UNDP Human Development Index, Niger is the least developed country in the world. Malaria is endemic in Niger with 97 percent of the population exposed to the risk of malaria. With a mortality rate of 255 per 1,000 children under the age of 5, which is among the highest in the world, and a maternal mortality rate of 650 per 100,000 births, malaria is one of the leading preventable causes of childhood mortality. For this reason, the program funded by this grant aims to reduce the morbidity and mortality within the population, in particular to children under 5 and pregnant women who are at risk of contracting malaria. The activities include training health workers and non-governmental/community-based organizations on the new treatment policy; procurement of laboratory equipment, rapid diagnostic tests and expanding the introduction of ACT therapy to all 42 districts in Niger; monitoring of treatment effectiveness; encouraging the uptake of intermittent presumptive therapy for pregnant women through behavior change communication; following up on the sensitivity of vectors to insecticides; strengthening the capacities at the National Malaria Control Program (PNLP); and conducting knowledge, attitude and practices surveys.
