47045-MDG-708-G10-M-1 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Malaria is a major public health issue in Madagascar with 92 percent of the population exposed to risk. The program supported by this grant aims to contribute to stopping malaria transmission in the central highlands region and to significantly reduce malaria transmission in endemic areas by 2012. The program will implement three strategies to achieve its goal: prevention with distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets through public, private and community sectors; home management of simple malaria in children under age five with the distribution at the community level of pre-packaged artemisinin-based combination therapies for treatment; and social mobilization through mass media and community agents. The program targets mothers and caregivers of children under age five, pregnant women, households, health workers and community health workers.
