47045-MDG-405-G07-M-2 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Malaria is a major public health issue in Madagascar with 92 percent of the population exposed to risk. During the first four years, the program supported by this grant focused on scaling up malaria prevention and treatment through the provision of highly subsidized long-lasting insecticidal nets and prepackaged kits for home treatment by means of social marketing activities. It thus complemented the free distribution of nets by other groups by expanding coverage and reaching low-income people. The program further reinforced sensitization for the use of long-lasting nets and pre-packaged treatment among mothers, including pregnant women and children under 5 years old, and to improve compliance in completing the treatment regimen for uncomplicated malaria cases in children under 5. Under the Rolling Continuation Channel extension, this program focuses on the continued scale-up of the provision of highly subsidized long-lasting insecticidal nets, addressing a large part of the needs for nets identified by the 2008-2012 revised Malaria National Strategic Plan. The aim is to achieve 90 percent coverage of households with two nets by the end of 2009 and maintaining that coverage until 2012. It is also expected that 90 percent of the most vulnerable groups will be sleeping under long-lasting insecticidal nets by 2012.
