47045-MAT-011-G01-H-2 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria <narrative xml:lang="en">Sex workers of Latin America and the Caribbean working to create alternatives that reduce vulnerability to HIV: a regional strategy with genuine impact - Americas - Multicountry Americas REDTRASEX (01-May-2014-31-Jan-2018)</narrative> This Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) proposal covers 15 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. In this LAC region, 80% of Female Sex Workers (FSWs) are living below the poverty line, have restricted access to education and are the focus of violence in society. Stigma and discrimination often leaves this population without proper access to health and prevention services. Epidemiological information shows that FSWs are a most-at-risk population in the region. The Program aims at strengthening the capacities of National Organizations of Female Sex Workers (NOFSWs) in these Spanish-speaking countries. By empowering the capacities of NOFSWs, FSWs will be able to actively engage and participate in public debates and hence improve public policies and programs for FSWs. The goal of this Program is to contribute to the reduction of HIV prevalence in female sex workers (FSW) in Latin America and Spanish-speaking Caribbean by strengthening their grassroots organizations.
