47045-GYA-810-G06-T-2 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria After years of success in controlling tuberculosis (TB) in Guyana in the 1970s, the disease re-emerged in the 1990s as an important health problem. Contributory factors include the HIV epidemic, and lapses in national control and prevention efforts. Integration of TB prevention, treatment and care activities into general health care services is critical to expanding access to TB services, but integration has been slow in 2000-2010. This is mostly due to a lack of capacity at local authority level, despite continued investment in health infrastructure and national capacity. The overall goal of the program supported by this grant is to reduce the transmission of TB and the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains by improved case detection and treatment success rates. Strategies include management of HIV/TB co-infection; expansion of DOTS in the prison system to all prisons; strengthening human resources at the central unit of the National TB Program; and developing and implementing regional programs. Additional activities include the development of a strategy for information, education and communication with a focus on materials concerning HIV/TB co-infection; and development and implementation of a public-private mix program to promote collaboration across sectors, and of TB treatment programs for hard-to-reach high-risk populations.
