The Ministry of Health in Fiji introduced the DOTS strategy for the treatment of TB in 1997. Even though the notification rate of all TB cases has declined at a rate of 3.9 percent per year over the past 15 years, the notification rate of new smear-positive cases has been stable. The program supported by this grant aims to reduce the burden of TB in Fiji; to achieve improved TB and HIV and AIDS outcomes through strengthening the capacity of the health system to deliver services; and to strengthen the health system by means of improving the production, management and use of information. The program targets 650 TB patients to be treated over five years; 750 children in contact with infectious patients who will be screened and will receive TB prophylaxis; people living with HIV; populations in remote areas or outer islands; and prisoners, who will benefit from improved access to diagnosis and treatment services for TB.
