General terms and conditions which apply to Global Fund grants. 47045-ECU-809-G05-M-2 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Natural disasters, in particular the hurricane El Niño, have heavily influenced the epidemiological evolution of malaria in Ecuador, which is now resurgent. The peak of the epidemic occurred in 2001, with 106,641 cases registered, 47 percent of which caused by P. falciparum (PAHO Basic Health Indicator database). Since then, the number of malaria cases has been decreasing, with 31,523 registered cases in 2006, according to the World Health Organization’s World Malaria Report 2008. The policy for first and second-line treatment for falciparum malaria has been modified twice due to the high resistance level of P. falciparum to chloroquine. The program will be implemented in 133 cantons in areas at risk of, or susceptible to, malaria transmission in 22 (out of 24) provinces in the country. These zones account for a population of 7,169,638 people, representing 47 percent of the country's total population (2008 data). The target population is located in at-risk zones with an emphasis on vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women and children under the age of 5, the indigenous population and immigrant workers. This grant is implemented by the Corporación Kimirina, which is in charge of increasing the capacity of health facilities to diagnose and treat malaria cases as well as training vulnerable populations (indigenous, students, migrants and internally displaced persons) in malaria prevention activities.
