General terms and conditions which apply to Global Fund grants. 47045-ECU-809-G04-M-2 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Natural disasters, particularly the hurricane El Niño, have heavily influenced the epidemiological evolution of malaria in Ecuador, which is now resurgent. The program supported by this grant is being implemented in 133 cantons in areas at risk of, or susceptible to, malaria transmission in 22 out of 24 provinces. These zones represent 47 percent of the country's total population. The program targets vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women and children under age 5, the indigenous population and immigrant workers. The program is implemented by the Ministry of Health, which is in charge of the procurement and distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets as well as the training of key health personnel and the treatment of malaria cases among vulnerable populations.
