47045-COM-910-G04-H-2 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria The Union of the Comoros which consists of three islands namely; Ngazidja, Mwali and Nzwani has a low HIV/AIDS prevalence. The program seeks to strengthen the epidemiological surveillance system currently in place based around district health Centres. It will also ensure the continuation of certain effective interventions of the Global Fund Round 3 program, as well as scaling up the prevention activities for key populations at risk. The objective of the program is to better understand epidemiological profile of HIV in the Union of the Comoros and the socio-behavioral profile of target groups in order to maintain HIV prevalence below 0.05 percent. The program plans to target populations of sex workers, youth aged 10 to 24 in educational settings and outside school, and patients suffering from Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). Moreover, the program will introduce STI/HIV education to 300 new schools by training and monitoring teachers and educating advisors. It will also help healthcare providers (i.e. doctors, pharmacists and paramedics) in both private and public sectors treat STIs using the syndrome based method.
