47045-COG-810-G02-T-2 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Congo is one of the 22 tuberculosis (TB) high-burden countries as defined by the World Health Organization. With 403 new TB cases (all forms) per 100,000 population reported in 2007, Congo is experiencing a severe TB epidemic that is unequally distributed across the country with the highest incidence (85 percent) detected in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. Coverage with DOTS, the basic package that underpins the Stop TB Strategy, extends to only 60 percent of the population. The goal of the program – the first in Congo to receive Global Fund support to fight TB – is to halve TB morbidity and mortality by strengthening and promoting DOTS, and expanding multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant TB control measures. The program targets TB patients and patients co-infected with TB and HIV, particularly focusing on women, young girls and prisoners.
