47045-CAF-911-G09-T-1 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem in Central African Republic (CAR). According to WHO 2009 report, the prevalence reached 424 cases per 100,000 habitants for all forms with an incidence of 328 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for new smear-positive cases. Based on a study carried out by the Institut Pasteur in Bangui in 2009, the rate for multi-drug resistance TB (MDR-TB) constituted 14 percent. The Round 9 proposal supports the Strategic Plan to Stop TB 2008-2012 and aims to contribute to a reduction in TB morbidity and mortality in CAR. Building on the Round 4 grant, the current grant seeks to improve the monitoring of patients receiving treatment to achieve a treatment success rate of 85 percent. The activities focus on expanding and enhancing of high-quality DOTS, fighting HIV/TB co-infection and MDR-TB, enhancing community involvement, advocacy, awareness-raising and social mobilization against TB, and strengthening program coordination and monitoring and evaluation.
