47045-BUL-202-G01-H-00-3 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria HIV does not yet pose a grave health problem in Bulgaria. Although HIV incidence has begun to rise, it is still at a low level relative to many other countries in the region. A cumulative total of 937 cases of HIV were registered for the period 1986–2008. Nevertheless, a sharp rise in the number of HIV cases among injecting drug users and men who have sex with men reflects the potential for the development of a concentrated epidemic in the country. The overall goal of the program supported by this grant is to sustain the low HIV prevalence in Bulgaria through the strengthening of infrastructure and the building of capacity in the national response to HIV and AIDS. The program also aims to reduce risky behaviors within vulnerable groups and ensure access to care and quality treatments for target groups which include injecting drug users, sex workers, Roma communities, youth and people living with HIV.
