Despite the fact that the tiny Central African nation has a population of only 7.5 million people, about 150,000 Burundians are infected, and the virus has left 120,000 orphans in its wake. The program supported by this grant aims to strengthen prevention services among the general population and for key populations at risk; improve diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections in all health facilities; enhance prevention of HIV transmission through blood and provide better case management of accidental exposure to blood and to victims of sexual abuse; expand primary prevention of HIV infection in women of reproductive age and strengthen the quality of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV coverage by integrating it with reproductive health. The program, which targets the general population, people living with HIV (PLHIV) and at-risk populations, including orphans and vulnerable children, pregnant women and newborns of HIV-infected mothers, will also promote male circumcision and increase the coverage and quality of therapeutic case management and monitoring of PLHIV at national level.
