47045-BEN-708-G07-M-2 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Malaria is endemic in Benin. It is a primary cause of sickness and death in the country and is an obstacle to socioeconomic development. The program supported by this grant aims to reduce malaria-related sickness and death among children under age 5 by scaling up the number of community-based health zones from three to 14. The program, which builds on work done under a previous Global Fund grant will partner with community-based organizations to achieve the goal. The program will procure artemisinin-based combination therapy and organize the distribution of the treatment at the community level; train community workers and health agents in appropriate case management; and educate mothers and caregivers of children less than 5 years of age in the early and appropriate management of malaria symptoms.
