47045-BDI-T-PNILT-1 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria <narrative xml:lang="en">PROGRAMME NATIONAL INTEGRE LEPRE ET TUBERCULOSE - Burundi (01-Mar-2016-31-Dec-2017)</narrative> Burundi is a country of an estimated 10.1 million inhabitants in a 27,830 square-kilometre territory. Tuberculosis (TB) incidence (all forms) has more than halved between 2000 (288 per 100,000) and 2014 (126 per 100,000).(WHO). However, case detection is low (53%, all forms), and the estimated prevalence of tuberculosis (including HIV-positive TB patients) is 195 per 100,000 (WHO, 2014). The estimated burden of multidrug-resistent (MDR)-TB is 2.2% among new TB cases, and 11% among retreatment cases, and HIV prevalence among TB patients is 15%. This grant focuses on increasing case detection and treatment of TB and multidrug-resistant (MDR)-TB during the period of 2015-2017. Strategies include the increased access and use of new TB diagnostic techniques such as GeneExperts, the cooperation between the PNLT and theNational AIDS Control Program (PNLS) for improved care among co-infected patients, improved case management in the community and the continuation of the MDR-TB program. The interventions are aligned with the country’s National Strategic Plan for TB (2014-2020), as well the joint TB-HIV action plan for the period 2015-2017. The National Integrated Leprosy and Tuberculosis Control Programme (PNILT) has been the Principal Recipient for TB grants under Round 4, Round 7 and the Transitional Funding Mechanism (TFM), with satisfactory programmatic performance ratings.
