47045-BDI-M-CARITAS-1 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria <narrative xml:lang="en">Supporting the reach of global coverage in LLITNs for sustainable prevention of Malaria in Burundi - Burundi (01-Jan-2016-31-Dec-2017)</narrative> Malaria is endemic and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Burundi. It accounts for 40% of medical consultations and is the leading cause of deaths in hospitals (36%). The entire population is at risk of malaria, and pregnant women and children under the age of 5 are particularly vulnerable. In line with the priorities of the Malaria National Strategic Plan (NSP) (2013-2017), this grant finances the logistics and distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) during the 2017 mass campaign; training for case management activities; integrated community case management in 12 districts; mass media and community sensitization on malaria prevention and treatment. The National Malaria Program’s main goals by end 2017 include reducing both malaria morbidity, and malaria infection particularly in children. It will also ensure that ≥90% of the population slept under an insecticide treated net the previous night, promote access to Intermittent Preventive Treatment during pregnancy among all eligible women attending antenatal care and confirm 100% of suspected malaria cases and ensure access to antimalarial treatment according to national guidelines. These interventions will be implemented by Caritas, as well as the “Programme National Intégré de Lutte contre le Paludisme” (PNILP), in order to ensure that the objectives of the NSP are met.
