47045-AZE-910-G06-T-2 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Azerbaijan faces a high Tuberculosis (TB) burden and is among the 25 countries identified by the World Health Organization as top priority states in fighting against multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extremely drug-resistant TB worldwide. In 2008, TB’s prevalence in prisons exceeded the country wide level over 40 times. The program aims on strengthening essential Directly Observed Treatment Short-term (DOTS) interventions as the key requirement for preventing resistance, as well as in achieving and sustaining universal access of the prison population to quality and timely diagnosis and treatment of drug-resistant forms of the disease. The program focuses on TB and MDR-TB patients in the penitentiary sector. The current grant complements the existing Round 7 TB grant in Azerbaijan implemented by the Ministry of Health, with the Ministry of Justice as sub-recipient for activities in the penitentiary sector. The program plans to provide training and re-training for TB doctors, nurses and laboratory technicians working in the penitentiary system, establish a proper supervision of TB control interventions in prisons, and upgrade the central laboratory of the Specialized Treatment for Detainees with TB (STID) with relevant equipment and supplies for rapid diagnosis of drug-resistant form of the disease.
